Audio Interface + Control Surface + Control Room Manager = MasterControl

It’s a simple equation, and we know that as a musician, you’re not fond of math, but MasterControl really is the sum of its three distinct studio-management factors.

MasterControl eliminates your need for individual analog and digital audio interfaces, speaker switching and routing units, mixing and transport-control surfaces, hardware volume controls, and more. The only piece of gear you need to input all of your sources into your DAW; the only piece of gear you need to control recording and editing; and the only piece of gear you need to run professional tracking and mixing sessions is MasterControl. We even throw in two powerful recording and production programs: Steinberg Cubase LE 4 and Ableton Live Lite 7.

Master Audio Interface
MasterControl is a 24-bit, 192kHz, high-resolution, low-latency audio interface. It is capable of nearly any input type and quantity, with a flexible and generous output section. It features low-latency FireWire computer connectivity for Mac and PC. The single cable carries all audio and control data from MasterControl to your DAW.

MasterControl contains eight analog inputs. Inputs one and two offer XLR connection, high-definition, discrete-design preamplifiers, 48V phantom power, and channel inserts. Inputs three through eight contain 1/4" TRS, line jacks. MasterControl’s input section can be expanded to handle up to 24 simultaneous inputs, including dual ADAT Lightpipe, coaxial, and optical S/PDIF. Six analog outputs and 16-channel MIDI I/O further extend MasterControl’s impressive I/O capabilities.

Extensive Control Surface
MasterControl contains hands-on controls for confidently running tracking and editing sessions. Multiple banks of assignable controllers enable access over 50 software parameters in real time.

Nine touch-sensitive, 100mm, motorized, capacitive Alps faders deliver the hands-on mixing experience that mixing in software with a mouse simply cannot rival. MasterControl has eight assignable knobs that access three control banks each and two banks of eight assignable buttons that access two control banks each. Dedicated transport controls and a multifunction jog wheel complete the tactile control package.

MasterControl’s DSP-driven internal mixer enables hardware-direct monitoring with zero discernable latency. It employs the industry-standard HUI protocol for communication with all popular DAW software, and requires no mapping for seamless interoperation. Building upon the standard, MasterControl also enables editing of templates and presets for customization. A large, dedicated display provides real-time visual feedback of all actions, and preview button allows safe audition of controls prior to sending commands to the DAW.

Control Room Management
MasterControl’s built-in speaker switching enables you to easily switch between multiple sets of monitor loudspeakers for ease of mix-accuracy checks. An internal talkback microphone enables easy communication with musicians while tracking.

Three pairs of independently assignable stereo outputs with dedicated, active mute buttons place the engineer squarely in the driver’s seat. With flexible, direct monitor routing, sources are assignable through any and all output pair(s). Dual, independently assignable stereo headphone outputs with independent gain controls further extend the output capabilities of MasterControl. The dedicated talkback microphone can be engaged from the control surface or using an optional footswitch.

Superior Audio Processing
MasterControl employs an advanced DICE II chip with JetPLL™ technology for clock-stable firewire-audio streaming and routing. JetPLL nearly eliminates audio-band jitter, greatly improves imaging, and decreases digital noise, all of which combine to deliver peerless sync.

As digital audio devices are added to a system, they increasingly create system-additive audio-band clock jitter. Variation between device clocks can actually fall outside the ability of some devices to cope, causing failure. JetPLL is extremely tolerant of wide variations in clock frequencies. Its hybrid design incorporates noise shaping to virtually remove audio-band jitter. This technology ensures the highest possible converter performance, resulting in better separation.

MasterControl contains 114 dB, 24-bit, 192 kHz stereo analog-to-digital converters. Sampling, analog-to-digital conversion, and anti-alias filtering are performed by MasterControl’s 24-bit, stereo ADCs at sample rates up to 192 kHz per channel. They employ a 5th-order delta-sigma modulator followed by low-latency digital filtering, eliminating the need for external anti-alias filtering and providing excellent noise rejection.

MasterControl also features 114 dB, 24-bit, 192 kHz multi-channel digital-to-analog converters. MasterControl’s uncompromising DAC system begins with digital de-emphasis, ATAPI channel mixing, digital-interpolation filtering, and an oversampled delta-sigma modulator. Audio is fed to the differential analog outputs through a multi-element switched-capacitor stage with low-latency IIR low-pass filtering.

Software and System Compatibility
MasterControl comes with a powerful software suite for recording and sequencing.
It includes Steinberg Cubase LE music production software with a full range of tools for audio and MIDI recording and mixing, and Ableton Live Lite, a production and performance program enabling you to create, produce and perform your music all in a single application.

MasterControl is an HUI+ control surface, meaning that it is uniquely programmable with HUI and Mackie Control compatibility for use with all popular DAWs, virtual instruments, and other audio software on Mac and PC.

Studio Recorder

Un-beatable Audio Performance Comes Home to Roost - Meet the Korg MR-2000S!

Korg captured the world's attention with their MR series of DSD mobile recorders and studio tools. After consulting with top recording and mastering professionals, Korg has now created the Korg MR-2000S Studio Recorder; a 2-track mixdown designed from the ground up to bring that same DSD sonic performance home for use in any studio environment.

A DSD and Mastering Recorder Born to Run
In keeping with the MR Series studio recorder heritage of portability, the MR-2000S 1- bit recorder adds a number of new features to meet the requirements of the most demanding studio, yet retains a sleek, single rack-space profile. This compact format is also ideal for any live recording rig; or for grabbing that "off-the-board" live recording night after night - as well as shuttling your recordings from venue to studio and back again. So whether you want to capture that once-in-a-lifetime performance with impeccable detail, or need to transfer those priceless recordings from session to session, the MR-2000S high-resolution audio recorder is ready to roll.

Master. Class.
All of Korg’s MR Series recorders feature the 1-Bit/2.8224 MHz format used in creating the SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc). The MR-2000S goes above and beyond this industry standard to provide 1-Bit/5.6448 MHz recording. At such accelerated sampling rates, the entire sound stage is faithfully captured, even during the softest passages. The clarity, ambience and true dynamic range of the original sound source are preserved with unprecedented accuracy.

By mastering in this superior format, the recorded material can always be re-created natively in whatever format you require, providing a true future-proof archive. In supporting these recording requirements, the MR-2000S uses the highest-quality components available - the CS4398 Digital to Analog Converter from Cirrus Logic and the Burr-Brown PCM4202 Analog to Digital Converter from Texas Instruments Corporation - minimizing any possible degradation of the audio signal.

Format Fiesta
In addition to the aforementioned 2.8 MHz and 5.6 MHz 1-Bit formats (DSDIFF, WSD and DSF formats are supported), the MR2000S is ready to record in any of the current 16-Bit and 24-Bit formats (from 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz) directly, in BWF (Broadcast WAV) format.

Easy on the Ears, Easy on the Eyes
Sure, the fidelity of the MR-2000S is a feast for the ears. But the multi-stage LED metering is a treat for the eyes as well. Accurate and responsive, each channel employs 24 bright, color-coded LEDs to provide detailed level information that is highly visible from nearly any vantage point, whether in the studio or in a remote live capture environment.

Got the Hook-up?
Versatility is the key when creating a recorder with a wide range of applications, and that’s where the MR-2000S shines. The XLR analog inputs feature a selectable -12dB, -14dB -16 dB, -18dB or -20 dB reference level, insuring the proper level match with nearly any audio source. XLR analog outputs are also provided. In addition, the MR-2000S is equipped with analog RCA style inputs and outputs for maximum flexibility.

On the digital side, coaxial S/P DIF digital I/O provides smooth integration into any 16-Bit or 24-Bit digital studio environment – from the music workshop to the broadcast studio. The MR-2000S also provides word clock I/O for reliable digital synchronization between various digital audio equipment or even between two MR-2000S Studio Recorders.

Save it for Later
The MR-2000S delivers up a whopping stereo record time of nearly 120 hours (16-Bit/44.1 kHz). Even at the highest resolution (1-Bit/5.6 MHz), the 80 GB internal hard drive provides a generous 14 hours of stereo recording time. In fact, the entire file structure of the MR-2000S has been designed to provide ample versatility and ease of use.

When you begin recording, the MR-2000S creates a date folder for that day (just as digital cameras can date each picture). Up to 400 “Date” folders can be created on the hard drive, and each can contain up to 400 “Projects”. Each MR-2000S recording creates two types of files: one containing the audio data and a second containing any marker data or protect settings. Collectively, these two files are called a “Project”, and the MR-2000S handles them as a single audio file.

To keep the internal drive ready and available, a convenient hi-speed USB 2.0 port allows files to be quickly saved and stored via PC. In fact the MR2000S’ internal hard drive can be used as a FAT32 USB external drive to carry source material and other files when needed.

Going for the One
It has never been easier to add the benefits of 1-Bit recording and future-proof archiving to your musical or commercial recording world, thanks to the new MR-2000S Studio Recorder. But don’t let that name fool you. The one-rackspace MR-2000S is also a welcome addition to any live sound/recording rig, for bringing home that rare performance in legendary 1-Bit clarity.

The high-resolution audio recorder includes a stereo electret condenser mic so the unit can be tucked away and the mic clipped or placed in a convenient location. It features an intuitive, menu-driven interface featuring a large backlit LCD for superb visibility.

A total of one thousand projects*** can be recorded in this Korg portable digital recorder, and file management functions such as Rename, Delete, and Protect can be easily applied to individual projects. Up to one hundred mark points can also be stored in each project.

***Recognizes a maximum of 200 projects for each format (WAV, DFF, DSF and WSD), max 1,000 projects

Free Integrated Software Solution
The MR-1 comes with Korg's innovative and powerful AudioGateTM software for Mac® and PC. AudioGate can convert 1-bit recordings into WAV and AIFF formats at various bit-rates (and vice versa) and offers real-time conversion and playback of DSD files using your computer's audio hardware.

AudioGate also performs essential functions like DC offset removal, gain control, and fade in/out. The combination of the MR-1 and this exclusive software makes the perfect system for both capturing and preserving your critical projects and source recordings. This archiving capability that had only been the domain of the major record companies and top studios is now available for everyone!

1-bit Technology Equals Pristine Fidelity
1-bit recording is the latest advancement in audio, and has been adopted for use in the critically acclaimed SACD recording format. DSD recording offers a frequency response of DC to 100 kHz and dynamic range of 120 dB. This uncompromising fidelity, low noise floor, extended dynamic range, lifelike imaging and analog quality depth has been praised by top experts. But there are other important advantages to the format that are of benefit to all recording professionals, regardless of their tracking platform.

Future Proof Flexibility
Today's state-of-the-art 24-bit converters use high-speed 1-bit conversion to capture audio, using real-time decimation and other processes to present the data in the desired bit depth/sample rate format. The beauty of the MR's bitstream format is that it uses the original 1-bit data, without the need for the other processes. In other words, what comes in is what comes out, with no manipulation needed.

As files are converted and reconverted between various bit depths and sampling rates, there are possibly degrading effects, depending on the sample rate conversion algorithms. The critical issue is that files mixed and mastered in today's state of the art resolution may be insufficient for tomorrow's formats. Archiving your final mixes and masters in a 1-bit system allows you to bypass these issues, and preserve your music with both the highest fidelity and in a more "universal" format. That data then can more easily be converted at a later date to the bit depth/sample rate format of your choice without compromising the integrity or fidelity of the data. You can even convert to newer formats that will be adopted in the future, be they multi-bit or a further migration to the 1-bit format.

Future Proof Recording Explained
For a complete overview of current PCM digital audio techniques and some of the principals and advantages that 1-bit recording provides both in terms of fidelity and archiving for future use, read
Future Proof Recording Explained.

* Notes: Recording Formats

DSF (DSD Stream File)
This is a DSD file format supported by some Sony "VAIO" personal computers (models with the "Sound Reality" engine) sold since September, 2005. This format is already supported by software such as "SonicStage Mastering StudioVer.2.0" and "DSD Direct," and it is expected that increasing numbers of software titles will support it in the future, including shareware and freeware.

WSD (Wideband Single-bit Data)
This is a 1-bit audio file format created by the "One-bit Audio Consortium." It accommodates all formats of one-bit audio data without limitation of channel number or sample rate. The "One-bit Audio Consortium" was established in 2001 with the goal of contributing to the advance of audio through research, development, and popularization of 1-bit audio technology and its work is currently supported by more than sixty members.

Journey thru the AudioGate
AudioGate is Korg’s exclusive file format conversion software, and is indispensible for working with your MR Series recordings.

By saving your MR-1 1-Bit recordings as the high resolution archival master, you can then use the AudioGate software to transform the data into multiple format masters. For example – the same source material can be used to create a CD master (16-bit/44.1 kHz); as the soundtrack in a DVD (DVD Audio = 24-bit/96 kHz), or imported into the latest DAW Session (at 24-bit/192 kHz).

This latest version of AudioGate – Version 2.0 – uses newly refined conversion algorithms that deliver exceptional results. In addition, AudioGate provides useful tools for treating and working with files. Individual songs may be spliced into one, or a single concert recording can be broken out into individual songs. Gain control, fades (in or out, linear or exponential) and DC offset correction are provided.

With Version 2.0 you can also read and create DSD Discs and Audio CDs, including support for album artwork. A “Normalize” function has been added, and newly developed advanced dithering options have been added, including Korg’s proprietary “AQUA” algorithm that provides superlative conversion results. Support for importing new file formats - FLAC, WMA, AAC and Apple Lossless formats and even MP3 – has been added as well.
